Bitcoin account vs. Bitcoin wallet vs. exchange account
- Exchange account (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken) — the exchange holds your Bitcoin. You have a username and password, not keys. They can freeze it, lose it, or go bankrupt with it (Mt. Gox, FTX, Celsius all proved this is not theoretical).
- Bitcoin wallet — software you control. A 12‑word seed phrase deterministically derives every address and private key. No company sits between you and the coins; no one can freeze, censor, or seize them remotely.
- ‘Bitcoin account’ — colloquial for either of the above. We use it to mean a self‑custody Bitcoin wallet, because that’s what most people actually want when they ask the question.
The difference becomes obvious the day an exchange pauses withdrawals. People with self-custody wallets shrug; people with exchange accounts refresh status pages.
How to open a Bitcoin account (60 seconds)
- Download Lightning Pay Wallet for your device (macOS, Windows, Linux).
- Tap “Create new wallet” — the app generates a 12‑word BIP-39 recovery phrase locally on your device. Lightning Pay never sees it.
- Write the 12 words down on paper, in order. Not a screenshot, not a cloud note, not a password manager you don’t fully control. This phrase IS the account — anyone with it controls your coins.
- Confirm a few words back to prove you wrote it down, then set a device PIN or biometric.
- Buy your first satoshis via MoonPay (card/bank), or receive BTC from someone else to your new on-chain or Lightning address.
That’s the whole process. There is no email verification, no KYC form, no waiting on a bank to approve you. The wallet is open the moment the seed phrase is generated.
Do I need ID to open a Bitcoin account?
To open the wallet, no — a non‑custodial wallet has no provider to KYC you. There is no central registry of Lightning Pay users because there is no central anything; the wallet runs entirely on your device.
To buy Bitcoin with a card or bank transfer, the on‑ramp partner (MoonPay) requires ID per the same regulations that apply to any regulated money service. Once funded, sending and receiving Bitcoin stays permissionless. To order the Visa card, the card issuer also requires KYC — that is a separate, optional product layered on top of the wallet itself.
What does a Bitcoin account cost?
- $0 to open · $0 monthly · $0 to receive on-chain or Lightning
- 0.1% in‑wallet swap (BTC ↔ USDC) — the cheapest swap fee in retail Bitcoin software
- 0.5% on/off‑ramp network markup on buys and withdrawals (in addition to the partner’s fee, e.g. MoonPay)
- 0.1% on bill pay and Visa card top-up swaps
- 0% FX on the included Visa card — useful for travelers; most US debit cards charge 1–3%
Is a Bitcoin account the same as a bank account?
No, and the differences are mostly to your advantage:
- No bank can freeze it. No court order, no chargeback dispute, no “your account has been temporarily restricted” email.
- No deposit insurance. Lose the seed phrase and the coins are gone — there is no FDIC equivalent. This is why backup is non-negotiable, not optional.
- Settlement is final in minutes (on-chain) or seconds (Lightning), not 1–3 business days.
- It works the same way in any country. Your Bitcoin account doesn’t care whether you’re in Lagos, Lisbon or Lima.
Most users treat a Bitcoin account as a parallel savings + payments layer, not a replacement for the bank. The point of Lightning Pay is that you can do both — hold BTC and stablecoins self-custody, and still pay rent, top up a phone, or tap a Visa card at the coffee shop.
How to back up a Bitcoin account properly
- Write the 12 words on two pieces of paper. Store one at home, one at a trusted second location (parents, safe deposit, fireproof safe).
- For larger balances, etch the words into a metal backup plate ($30–$80). Paper survives most things; fire and floods aren’t among them.
- Never type the 12 words into a website, an LLM chat, an email draft, or a screenshot. Phishing attacks targeting seed phrases are the single biggest cause of self-custody loss.
- Test recovery once — wipe the app, reinstall, restore from the seed, and verify your balance reappears. This is the only proof your backup actually works.
