TL;DR
- Cash App: custodial. They hold your BTC. US-only for Bitcoin features.
- Cash App's fees look low (~1.75% service fee) but hide a 1–2% spread on top.
- Lightning Pay: non-custodial, global, ~1% all-in via bank transfer.

The Cash App spread nobody talks about
Cash App's advertised 1.75% service fee is only half the story. They also add a spread between the market price and your buy/sell price — usually another 1–2%. On a $1,000 buy that's $30–35 going to Cash App vs ~$10 going to MoonPay through Lightning Pay. Over a year of DCA, that's hundreds of dollars.
When Cash App makes sense
You're in the US, you already use Cash App for peer payments, and you want a one-tap Bitcoin buy without learning anything new. It's an excellent on-ramp; just withdraw to a non-custodial wallet immediately after buying. See our Withdraw Bitcoin from Cash App guide.
When Lightning Pay is the better pick
- You're outside the US.
- You want lower all-in fees on every buy.
- You want to skip the withdraw step — buy directly into self-custody.
- You want hardware wallet integration.
- You want a real tax report, not just a 1099-B.
A worked example: $500/month DCA for a year
Stack 12 monthly $500 buys in Cash App: ~1.75% service fee plus a 1.5% average spread = ~3.25% per buy. That's $16.25 per month, $195 per year, sliced off before any Bitcoin lands in your account. Run the same schedule through Lightning Pay's bank-transfer rail at ~1% all-in and you pay $5 per month, $60 per year. The $135 you keep is roughly an extra month of stack at today's prices — every year, compounding.
The other gap is custody: a year of Cash App DCA leaves all twelve buys sitting in Cash App's custody until you remember to withdraw. A year of Lightning Pay DCA leaves all twelve buys in your own wallet from minute one, with no withdrawal step and no on-chain miner fee per pull.
Moving Bitcoin out of Cash App
Cash App lets you withdraw Bitcoin on-chain or over Lightning. Lightning is free and instant up to your daily limit; on-chain costs whatever the current miner fee market demands. The full step-by-step lives in our Withdraw Bitcoin from Cash App guide.
