TL;DR — where credit cards quietly cost you

Credit cards advertise rewards but charge you in five other places: annual fees, FX markup, cash-advance fees, late-payment interest, and merchant surcharges. The Lightning Pay Bitcoin Visa card runs on the same Visa rails with a fee schedule that's flat, transparent, and lower on every single line item.

On a typical $30,000/year of card spend with 25% international, the Lightning Pay Visa card saves a US household $400–$900/year vs a mainstream travel credit card — before counting the value of any rewards either card pays.

Foreign transactions — the silent 3% tax

Most non-travel credit cards charge a 3% foreign-transaction fee on every purchase in a non-domestic currency. That's $3 on a $100 dinner in Paris, $30 on a $1,000 hotel night in Tokyo, and adds up to hundreds of dollars per international trip. Premium "no-FX" cards drop the fee but charge $95–$695/year for the privilege.

Cash advance — the worst fee in finance

Pulling cash from an ATM with a credit card triggers a cash advance: a 5% (or $10) fee, plus interest starting immediately at 27–30% APR, with no grace period. A $300 ATM withdrawal can cost $15 in fees plus a few dollars of interest before you even get home.

The Lightning Pay Visa card is a debit-style card drawn from your own balance — there is no cash advance concept. ATM withdrawals are subject to the ATM operator's fee only (typically $2–$4), with no markup from us.

Why Lightning Pay can charge less

Debit, not credit

No credit risk, no fraud underwriting cost, no carried-balance interest to charge or finance.

Lightning rails

Settlement to the merchant is cheaper than card-network interchange in many regions.

No reward arbitrage

We don't fund big sign-up bonuses by charging $695 annual fees. The pricing is the pricing.
