Five ways to spend Bitcoin
- Gift cards: instant, 5,000+ brands, near-zero friction. Works at any retailer that sells gift cards — i.e. effectively everywhere.

Merchants that accept Bitcoin directly
The directly-accepting list grew meaningfully through 2024–2026 as Lightning UX improved. Notable names in 2026: Newegg, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Mullvad, Twitch (Bits), Twitter/X tips, Cheapair, Travala, ShopinBit, Steam (via BitPay re-integration in some regions), AT&T (bill pay via BitPay), and most major VPN, hosting and domain providers (Namecheap, Njalla).
Outside the directly-accepting list — which is still a small fraction of global commerce — the practical answer is the Visa card or a gift card. Lightning Pay maintains an in-app directory that filters merchants by Lightning vs on-chain and by country.

Spending UX tips
- Pre-fund the Visa card balance
- so the swap rate is locked when you load, not when you tap. Avoids surprises if BTC moves mid-day.
- Use Lightning whenever possible
- even for amounts where on-chain would technically work. Fees are 100–1000× lower and confirmation is instant.
- Don’t spend coins you plan to keep.

Tax
Every BTC spend is a taxable disposal in the US, UK, EU, AU and most jurisdictions — even buying a $4 coffee. The taxable amount is the difference between your basis (what you paid for those sats) and the fair market value at the moment of spend. This is why most heavy spenders fund a Visa card pre-loaded with stablecoins (USDC) and only swap BTC → USDC on a planned cadence; the swap is the taxable event, the daily spends from USDC are not.
