Cheapest method overall — by amount

Under $500
Lightning withdrawal via Strike or Lightning Pay. Fees are sub-cent, settlement is seconds.
$500 – $5,000
Lightning off-ramp direct to bank (Lightning Pay). ~1.5% all-in beats any ACH/wire combo when you factor spread on the sale.
$5,000 – $25,000
Kraken or Coinbase ACH, executed as a limit order on the book rather than instant convert. Costs roughly 0.4–0.8% net once you account for spread.
$25,000+
OTC desk (River, Kraken OTC, Coinbase Prime). Single quoted price, same-day wire, no slippage.

Hidden costs to watch for

Spread is usually larger than the headline fee. A “$0 fee” instant convert with a 1.5% spread is a 1.5% fee in disguise. Always compare the actual net fiat amount you receive against the live mid-market BTC/USD rate at the moment of execution — not the “fee” line item.

Other costs that don’t show up as fees: minimum withdrawal amounts (forcing you to leave dust behind), withdrawal cooldowns (capital sitting idle is a cost), enhanced-KYC pop-ups at higher amounts (time + paperwork), and the silent risk premium of leaving funds on a custodial exchange between sale and withdrawal.

On-chain fee tips

  • Mempool fees fluctuate 10–200 sats/vB. Use mempool.space to time non-urgent withdrawals into a low-fee window — usually weekends and US/EU overnight hours.
  • Batched withdrawals (multiple recipients in one tx) cut per-transaction fees dramatically. Some exchanges (Kraken, Bitfinex) batch automatically; others (Binance) charge a flat fee regardless.
  • Set your own fee rate when possible. Many exchanges default to "fast" which can be 3–5× higher than "next block" during low congestion.
  • Consider withdrawing in larger, less frequent chunks. The fee is per-transaction, not per-amount.
