The short answer

The fastest, cheapest, and safest way to cash out Bitcoin in 2026 is a Lightning off-ramp from a non-custodial wallet directly to your bank account. Using Lightning Pay Wallet, you keep self-custody until the second of sale, pay a flat 0.5% network/withdrawal markup, and receive fiat in your bank account in minutes via FedNow, SEPA Instant, Faster Payments, Pix, SPEI, or UPI — 24/7, weekends included.

Centralized exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance) are cheaper on paper but slower (1–5 business days for ACH/SEPA), custodial, and force you to deposit BTC into their hot wallet first. Bitcoin ATMs are instant but eat 8–15% in fees. P2P platforms (Bisq, Robosats, Hodl Hodl) are the most private but require finding a counterparty. The right method depends on speed, size, privacy, and how much custody risk you can stomach — the full breakdown is below.

Six ways to cash out Bitcoin

  1. Lightning Pay → bank — minutes, ~0.5% all-in, non-custodial.
  2. Centralized exchange — Coinbase, Kraken, Binance; 1–5 days, 0.1–0.6% trading + spread, custodial.
  3. Cash App / Strike — minutes, US/UK only, custodial.
  4. Bitcoin ATM — instant cash, 8–15% fees, KYC over $900 in most US states.
  5. P2P — Bisq, Robosats, Hodl Hodl; private, slower, learning curve.
  6. Bitcoin debit card — spend like a debit card; ATM withdrawal optional.

Below we rank each by speed, fee, custody, and best fit so you can pick once and stop juggling tabs.

Fastest way to cash out Bitcoin

The fastest non-custodial path is a Lightning off-ramp. Lightning Pay Wallet sends a Lightning payment to a regulated partner (Strike in the US/UK, MoonPay in the EU and beyond) that pays out fiat to your bank via an instant rail. SEPA Instant in the EU, FedNow in the US, Faster Payments in the UK, Pix in Brazil, SPEI in Mexico, and UPI in India all settle in seconds. The whole flow — from "I want to cash out" to "money in bank" — is typically 60–120 seconds, even on a Sunday at 2am.

For physical cash, a Bitcoin ATM is the fastest — but the 8–15% fee is brutal for amounts over a few hundred dollars. Use ATMs only for sub-$200 emergencies; everything else, use the Lightning rail.

Cheapest way to cash out Bitcoin

If you can wait 3–5 business days, Coinbase ACH is essentially free — you pay only the trading spread (0.5–2% depending on size and product tier). Kraken Pro is similar: 0.16% maker / 0.26% taker plus the SWIFT/SEPA payout fee. For speed without ripoff fees, Lightning Pay's flat 0.5% network/withdrawal markup is the sweet spot — no spread games, no "instant" surcharge.

Bitcoin ATMs are by far the most expensive option and rarely worth it. A $1,000 cash-out at a typical 12% ATM fee costs $120; the same amount through Lightning Pay Wallet costs about $5 and arrives in your bank in two minutes.

Worked example: $5,000 cash-out, four methods

Same amount, same day, four different paths. All-in costs assume current 2026 fee schedules and exclude trading spread (which moves with market liquidity but typically adds 0.2–0.8%).

Lightning Pay → bank (Strike/SEPA Instant)
$25 fee · 2 minutes · non-custodial until sale
Coinbase ACH (US)
~$10 fee · 1–3 business days · custodial deposit required
Cash App (US only)
~$15 fee · minutes · custodial, 1% instant withdraw surcharge
Bitcoin ATM
$600 fee at 12% · instant cash · KYC over $900 in most US states

Step-by-step: cash out with Lightning Pay

  1. Install Lightning Pay desktop or mobile from lightningpay.info/download.
  2. Restore your existing seed or create a new wallet and fund it with BTC.
  3. Open Withdraw → Bank, pick your currency (USD, EUR, GBP, BRL, MXN, INR…), enter the amount and your bank details.
  4. Review the quote: BTC amount, fiat received, 0.5% network/withdrawal markup, and the receiving rail (FedNow, SEPA Instant, etc.).
  5. Confirm with Face ID / PIN. Fiat lands in your bank in minutes.

For exchange-specific instructions and edge cases (large amounts, tax-lot picking, multiple wallets) see the pillar guide.

Cashing out by country

The right rail depends on where your bank is. Lightning Pay routes automatically based on currency, but it helps to know what's available so you can plan around bank cut-offs.

United States
FedNow + RTP (24/7) or ACH (1–3 days). USD payouts via Strike.
Eurozone
SEPA Instant (10 seconds, 24/7). EUR payouts via MoonPay.
United Kingdom
Faster Payments (24/7). GBP payouts via Strike.
Brazil
Pix (instant, 24/7). BRL payouts via regional partner.
Mexico
SPEI (instant business hours, near-instant otherwise). MXN payouts.
India
UPI (instant, 24/7). INR payouts via regional partner.
Other countries
SWIFT wire fallback (1–2 business days, $15–25 fee).

Taxes when cashing out

Selling BTC is a taxable event in most jurisdictions — US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and most of LATAM treat cash-outs as a disposal that triggers capital gains. You owe tax on the difference between sale price and cost basis, taxed as short-term (held under 12 months) or long-term gains.

Lightning Pay's built-in Tax Assistant tracks every withdrawal with the matching cost basis lot attached and exports a CSV compatible with Koinly, CoinTracker, TurboTax, and most accountant workflows. It also generates IRS Form 8949 line items for US filers and a UK CGT-friendly summary.
