TL;DR — different chains, different jobs
MetaMask and Lightning Pay are both non-custodial wallets, but they live in different universes. MetaMask is the default Ethereum / EVM wallet — built for smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs and any chain that copies the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Lightning Pay is the default Bitcoin wallet — built for real on-chain BTC, Lightning Network payments, stablecoins, and a Visa card on the same balance.

Real Bitcoin vs wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)
The single biggest difference: MetaMask cannot hold actual BTC on the Bitcoin blockchain. It holds Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) on Ethereum, which is a token issued by BitGo and Bitgo's custodian network. Each WBTC is supposed to be backed 1:1 by real BTC held in custody — but you're trusting a centralized custodian, not the Bitcoin network.
- WBTC issuer
- BitGo (centralized custodian)
- WBTC redemption
- Through approved merchants only — not direct
- WBTC failure modes
- BitGo insolvency, custody loss, regulatory freeze, smart-contract bug
- Real BTC failure modes
- Lost seed phrase. That's the list.
- WBTC transfer cost
- Ethereum gas ($0.50–$30)
- Real BTC transfer cost
- On-chain ~$1; Lightning < $0.01
Fee comparison on a real $1,000 transfer
| Path | Speed | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Pay → Lightning | <1s | < $0.01 |
| Lightning Pay → on-chain BTC | 10–60 min | $1–$5 |
| MetaMask → WBTC on Ethereum | 1–3 min | $3–$25 (gas) |
| MetaMask → USDC on Ethereum | 1–3 min | $2–$20 (gas) |
| MetaMask → USDC on Base / Arbitrum | 1–3s | $0.05–$0.30 |

Coming from MetaMask: how to move to real Bitcoin
- 1
Install Lightning Pay
Download for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux from /download. - 2
Create a Bitcoin wallet
Write down the 12-word seed phrase on paper. Different from your MetaMask seed (which is Ethereum-derived). - 3
Unwrap your WBTC (optional)
Sell WBTC on a DEX for ETH or USDC, then on-ramp to real BTC through Lightning Pay's MoonPay or Strike integration. - 4
Or buy real BTC directly
Tap Buy in Lightning Pay → pick MoonPay or Strike → BTC lands in self-custody in seconds. - 5
Run both
Keep MetaMask for Ethereum / DeFi. Use Lightning Pay for Bitcoin, Lightning, stablecoins and spending.
