Why one wallet is never enough
Serious Bitcoin users separate funds across multiple wallets — a hot wallet for daily spend, a hardware wallet for long-term cold storage, a watch-only wallet to check balances without exposing keys, sometimes a family or business wallet alongside. Most apps force you to install three different programs to do this. Lightning Pay handles all of it from one desktop app.
Wallet types supported
- Standard hot wallet
- 12-word seed, on-chain + Lightning, ideal for daily use.
- Hardware wallet pairing
- Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard, BitBox. Keys stay on the device; Lightning Pay is the interface.
- Watch-only
- import an xpub to monitor balances/transactions without keys.
- Multi-signature
- 2-of-3 or 3-of-5 setups for shared treasury or self-custody upgrades.
- Lightning-only
- fast spending wallet topped up from cold storage.
Common multi-wallet setups
- Personal stacker
- Cold (Coldcard) + Hot (Lightning) + Watch-only on a backup device.
- Family
- One wallet per family member, each with their own seed, plus a shared multi-sig vault.
- Business
- Operating wallet (single-sig) + treasury (multi-sig) + payroll Lightning wallet.
- Privacy
- Separate wallets for separate identities; never mix coins between them.
Switching between wallets
One click in the top bar switches the active wallet. Send/receive/buy/sell all operate on the currently selected wallet. The dashboard view shows totals across every wallet you've added — useful for portfolio tracking — but every transaction is explicitly tied to one wallet so there's no chance of sending from the wrong place.
Backup, recovery, security
Each wallet has its own 12-word seed phrase that you back up separately. Lightning Pay encrypts wallet files locally with a password of your choice. If your device is lost, restore any wallet on any computer from its seed phrase — there's no Lightning Pay server holding anything.
Desktop vs mobile for multi-wallet
Multi-wallet workflows belong on desktop. The bigger screen lets you keep a treasury wallet, an operating wallet, and a watch-only wallet open in tabs without paging back and forth, and the keyboard makes labelling and tagging UTXOs vastly faster. The phone app still shows every wallet you have, but defaults to your daily-spend hot wallet so a tap-to-pay experience stays one tap. Mac, Windows, and Linux builds are feature- identical — pick whichever OS you already use.
Labels, tags, and per-wallet bookkeeping
Every wallet keeps its own transaction history, labels, and notes. Lightning Pay supports per-UTXO labels (useful for coin control and tax accounting), per-wallet fiat display, and per-wallet Auto-DCA schedules. When you export to the Tax Assistant, choose a single wallet or roll the lot together — most accountants prefer per- wallet exports because each one maps cleanly to a real-world purpose.
