Sell Bitcoin anonymously

Legal no-KYC paths to convert BTC into fiat — what each method costs, who it's for, and the tax angle nobody else explains.

What 'anonymous' actually means here

For this guide, "anonymous" means no centralized account, no government-ID upload, and no on-chain link between your identity and the sale. It does NOT mean tax-free — you still owe capital gains in nearly every jurisdiction.

Legal no-KYC sell methods

Bisq
Decentralized desktop P2P. Sell for SEPA, ACH, cash by mail, or other crypto.
Robosats
Lightning-native, Tor-only. Fast (minutes once matched). Small-medium amounts.
Hodl Hodl
Non-custodial with multisig escrow. Global payment methods.
In-person for cash
Local meetups, direct trades.
Bitcoin ATM (small amounts)
Some 2-way ATMs allow sells up to ~$900/day without ID.
03

Trade-offs vs KYC off-ramps

Lower visible fees but higher friction — counterparty matching can take hours, liquidity is thinner, and you're responsible for OPSEC (avoiding address reuse, using a clean wallet, etc.).
04

Tax — the honest part

The IRS, HMRC, ATO, and most other tax authorities treat all BTC disposals as taxable, regardless of platform or KYC status. Lightning Pay's Tax Assistant helps generate a clean cost-basis report even for non-KYC trades.

05

Receiving the fiat or trade leg in Lightning Pay

Lightning Pay Wallet generates a fresh Lightning invoice or on-chain address per trade — no account, no email, no IP logging on our side. P2P counterparties pay you in fiat off-platform (SEPA, cash, Revolut), while the BTC leg of the trade settles directly to or from your wallet's keys. Sats received without KYC stay non-custodial; we never retroactively ask for identity.

06

OPSEC checklist for anonymous sales

  • Use a fresh receive address for each P2P trade — no address reuse.
  • Route trading traffic over Tor or a trusted VPN, especially on Robosats.
  • Keep "private" sats separate from KYC-purchased sats — Lightning Pay supports labeled accounts inside one wallet.
  • Never paste a Lightning invoice or address into a chat your real name is attached to.
  • For amounts >$5k, use multisig escrow (Hodl Hodl) rather than trust-based trades.
