Every way to sell BTC for physical cash

Bitcoin ATM cash-out
Two-way ATMs dispense cash. Fees 7–12%. Find machines on CoinATMRadar.
P2P in-person
Bisq / Hodl Hodl matched with a local buyer, meet in public, exchange cash for a Lightning payment on the spot.
Local meetups
Bitcoiner meetup groups — often the cheapest, near spot price.
Cash by mail
Bisq supports trades where the buyer mails you cash. Use registered/tracked post.

Step-by-step: Bitcoin ATM cash-out

  1. Find a two-way ATM on CoinATMRadar — confirm it supports selling.
  2. At the machine, choose Sell Bitcoin. Enter the amount.
  3. The ATM displays a QR or invoice. Scan it with Lightning Pay and confirm payment.
  4. Wait for confirmations (Lightning = seconds, on-chain = 10–30 min).
  5. The ATM dispenses cash.
03

Cash sale safety

  • Meet in well-lit, public places (coffee shops, bank lobbies).
  • Tell someone where you're going.
  • For amounts >$1k, prefer multisig escrow (Hodl Hodl) over trust-based trades.
  • Count cash before releasing BTC.

What it actually costs on a $1,000 BTC → cash

Bitcoin ATM
$80–$120 fee — you walk out with ~$900.
P2P (Bisq, Hodl Hodl)
0.5–2% trade fee + your time matching a counterparty — typically $985–$995 in cash.
In-person meetup at spot
0% if you find a friendly trader — but bring escrow rules.
Lightning Pay → bank → ATM withdrawal
~$15 total (0.5% Lightning Pay + ATM operator fee). Slower by one ATM trip but by far the cheapest path for amounts over a few hundred dollars.
05

Using Lightning Pay for the trade leg

Whatever method you pick, the BTC side of the trade settles fastest over Lightning. Lightning Pay Wallet generates a Lightning invoice the buyer (or ATM) can pay in under a second — no waiting for on-chain confirmations while standing in a coffee shop counting twenties.

06

Tax note

Cash sales are still taxable events. The IRS, HMRC, and most other tax authorities require reporting regardless of payment method. Lightning Pay's Tax Assistant logs the BTC side of cash trades so you can match it against the cash you received at filing time.
